Norway’s Duo Saxe – flute and guitar

Norwegian flautist Charlotte Ud√∏ Kjeldsberg and guitarist Runar Kjeldsberg in their first performance in Australia -¬†hosted by Canberra Classical Guitar Society. Performing together as “Duo Saxe” since 2001, they have toured extensively in Europe. Runar and Charlotte will be showcasing Italian music from the 19th century from their CD ‚ÄúDuetto Concertante‚Äù due to be released in April.

Michael Sollis and Bradley Kunda win commissions

Canberra Classical Guitar Society

Wesley Music Foundation


In 2010, Canberra Classical Guitar Society and Wesley Music Foundation launched The Classical Guitar Composition Project. We are pleased to announce the two winners of the competition, Michael Sollis and Bradley Kunda. The pair surpassed the competition from other applicants and have won the two $1,000 commissions to compose works for amateur guitar orchestra, and specifically for the Canberra Guitar Ensemble (made up of members of Canberra Classical Guitar Society).

Michael Sollis has previously written works for voice and instruments as well as musical publications. His achievements include prizes from the Sydney Performing Arts Challenge (categories: Best Australian Song 2008, Best Original Composition 2007) and the ANU Harold Allen Memorial Prize for Composition 2005, among others. His works have been performed by the Griffyn Ensemble, dominantSEVEN, Tucarna Flute Quartet, The Australian Voices, Queensland Conservatorium Brass Band and many others. Michael keeps busy as the ACT Branch Manager ‚Äì Musica Viva, Composition Tutor – ANU School of Music, Artistic Director/Founder ‚Äì The Griffyn Ensemble, Musical Director ‚Äì Canberra Mandolin Orchestra, Musical Director ‚Äì Canberra Boys Choir and many more.

Bradley KundaBradley Kunda won the coveted 2005 National Undergraduate Scholarship at the Australian National University, where he is currently a PhD candidate in guitar performance.  Bradley won first prize in the Fifth International Competition “Festival de Córdoba” (Spain) and the audience prize in the Nikšić International Guitar Competition (Montenegro). He was awarded the 2007 Erika Haas Award for the most outstanding instrumental performance student at the Australian National University. He is currently the recipient of an Australian Professional Award.  Bradley performs as a member of the BREW Guitar Duo,  contemporary music septet dominantSEVEN and Australia’s leading guitar quartet, Guitar Trek.   As a composer, his guitar works are regularly played on ABC Classic FM and have been finalist entries in the 3rd International Australian Guitar Composition Competition and the ASME Young Composers’ Awards.  Bradley currently teaches guitar performance in the pre-tertiary program at ANU and tutors and lectures in various musicology subjects for undergraduate students.

AMEB Classical guitar public consultation now open

Dear interested parties one and all!

The AMEB Classical Guitar Syllabus committee has further developed the draft writing brief to guide the composition of the new Classical Guitar syllabus. This draft writing brief and an accompanying survey is  now available for Public Consultation on the Federal AMEB website. This consultation will run until Monday 11th of April 2011.

The Wednesday Lunchtime Live concert series at Wesley Music Centre in Forrest showcases outstanding musical talent throughout the year.

Classical guitar showcase – new dates and location

On Saturday & Sunday 26- 27 March from 10 am to 6.00 pm, Pierre Herrero, Spanish Guitar Imports, will showcase some of his more than 350 guitars at the National Vintage Guitar & Amp Expo.  The best part is, you can ask him to bring the ones you want to try.   He’ll be at  The Statesman Hotel, corner Strangways and Theodore Streets, Curtin ACT 2605.

Annual Friends of ANU School of Music guitar concert

The annual concert by Tim Kain‘s students will be held at the home of Christine Goode in Ainslie on Friday 8th April at 7:30pm.

Those performing include Andrey Lebedev, Andrew Blanch, Ariel Nurhadi, Callum Henshaw and Campbell Diamond in works by Granados, Bach, de Falla, Albeniz, Bizet, Richard Charlton and Phillip Houghton.

This is a fund raiser for the Friends of the School of Music. Prices are $30 adult, $25 fro members of the Friends, $10 student. Those who would like to attend need reserve seats with Christine then pay at the door on the night. It is always a capacity crowd, so the bookings should be made soon – either by email to Christine at fogo@bigpond.net.au, or by phone 6230 1993.

The Classical Guitar ‚Äì Inspiration and Dedication

ABC Classic FM’s program Music Makers, hosted by Mairi Nicolson, has just concluded a 4-part feature on the Classical Guitar on Sunday. This series is definitely worth a listen with some great interviews including Timothy Kain and John Williams.

Music Makers includes conversations with people currently making music around Australia and overseas. In this series, UK-based Australian guitarist Craig Ogden discusses, interviews and features some of Australia’s best classical guitar talent. ABC Limelight magazine featured recording of the month – “Landscape”

Canberra-based Brew Guitar Duo members Matthew Withers and Bradley Kunda were interviewed by Alex Chilvers for the March 2011 issue of ABC’s Limelight magazine. The interview is online at http://www.limelightmagazine.com.au.

Limelight is featuring Brew Guitar Duo’s second CD Landscape as its recording of the month with a review in the March issue which goes on sale 16 February.¬† According to the review, Landscape is described as “stunning.”¬† Those of us lucky enough to already own a copy would certainly agree.¬† Well done to Bradley and Matthew!!
