Woodworks – CD by Greg O’Rourke

Canberra-based musician Greg O’Rourke has announced the launch of his debut album, Woodworks – Music for Classical Guitar Solo.

Guitar Trek 25th Anniversary Concert – 15 September

Saturday September 15, 7:30pm – Double Anniversary: Tribute to 25 years of Guitar Trek & 10 years of Wesley Music Centre.  Canberra-based classical guitar quartet Guitar Trek (Timothy Kain, Minh Le Hoang, Bradley Kunda & Matt Withers) celebrate the quartet’s 25th anniversary.  Program includes works by Tchaikovsky, Koehne, Houghton, Westlake, Brahms (arr. Kunda) and de Falla.   The quartet’s latest CD Six Fish will also be featured.  Adults $30, concession $25, full-time students $15 and children $10. Book online or buy tickets at the door.

ANU School of Music guitarists win First and Second Prize in Adelaide

Australian National University School of Music student Andrey Lebedev was announced as the winner of the Adelaide International Classical Guitar Competition on Saturday 11 August at the 2012 Adelaide International Guitar Festival in the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Dunstan Playhouse.

The 21 year-old former Adelaide University Elder Conservatorium of Music student who is mentored by esteemed guitarist and teacher Timothy Kain, was a worthy victor winning the coveted first prize including $10,000 in prize money and a guitar made by revered maker Jim Redgate valued at $16,000. The prize is made possible by the generosity of the Adelaide Festival Centre Foundation and Jim Redgate Guitars. It is supported by Marsh Australia.

Slava Grigoryan presents second prize to Stephanie Jones

Andrey impressed the judges in his 15 minute finals performance with his execution of Agustin Barrios Mangore’s Una Limosne Por Amor Dios, J.S Bach’s Allegro from Violin Sonato No.2 BWV 1003 and Alberto Ginastero’s Canto and Finale from Guitar Sonata.

The second place finisher, Stephanie Jones,is also a student of Timothy Kain at ANU School of Music.  Originally from Perth, Stephanie out-performed the other finalists from Australia, China, France, Germany and Thailand.  Second prize was $4,000.

Guitar Trek is headed to Adelaide

From the 26 July 2012 Canberra Times.  “Timothy Kain and Guitar Trek boldly go where no guitar group has gone before,” Peter Wilkins writes:

In 1987, Timothy Kain, head of guitar at the School of Music, dared to go where no guitarist had gone before. He and guitar-maker Graham Caldersmith dreamed of creating a guitar family, and so it was that Guitar Trek set out on a journey to explore new horizons in guitar music.

Twenty-five years later and with its fifth line-up of musicians joining Kain, Guitar Trek comprises Kain and three graduates of his course, Minh Le Hoang, winner of the 2010 Tokyo International Classical Guitar Competition, and Bradley Kunda and Matt Withers, who have also established a fine reputation as the Brew Guitar Duo. Canberra conquers Córdoba – again!

Great news from the ANU School of Music about one of their guitar students.  In addition to this year’s impressive first place by Callum Henshaw, former winners of the Cordoba competition include Jacob Cordover (2006), Harold Gretton (2007), Bradley Kunda (2008) – ALL from the ANU guitar department, headed by Timothy Kain.

“On the 9th of July, Canberra born classical guitarist, Callum Henshaw, was awarded first prize in the IX Concurso Internacional de Guitarra – Festival de Córdoba, Spain.  He received grants from the ANU and the Friends of the School of Music to travel to Spain to participate in the Córdoba Guitar Festival and International Competition, which gathers some of the world’s best guitarists in an environment of education and learning.

“Callum started playing guitar at the age of 6 and has learned from a number of talented teachers, including Carolyn Kidd, Daniel McKay and Minh Le Hoang. He is currently studying for a Bachelor degree in Music Performance at the Australian National University’s School of Music under the tutelage of the world-renowned guitar pedagogue, Tim Kain.

“As part of his studies, Callum performs regularly at the School of Music, and often plays in Canberra’s various music venues. He has performed twice at the Canberra International Music Festival, both as a solo artist and giving the premiere performance of a Peter Sculthorpe work, Love Song, for guitar and string orchestra. Cal is also a member of the Canberra Guitar Quartet with other talented young guitarists Andrew Blanch, Campbell Diamond and Andrey Lebedev.” (http://music.anu.edu.au/news)

Simon PowisSaturday 18 August 7:30pm  A passionate and expressive style coupled with a formidable technique has garnered attention for Simon Powis as a talented soloist, chamber musician and innovator.  Simon, who currently lives in New York City, is a graduate of Sydney Conservatorium of Music and a PhD candidate at Yale University where he studied under Ben Verdery.  Simon is a featured artist at the Adelaide International Guitar Festival being held 9-12 August 2012.    More info at www.simonpowis.com. Grigoryan Brothers in Canberra – 19 July

Slava and Leonard Grigoryan perform at the Canberra Southern Cross Club in Woden on 19 July.  This program sees the Grigoryan Brothers performing from their latest album ‘The Seasons’, a twelve-movement composition by Tchaikovsky, along with compositions from Brazil and works that showcase their improvisational skills.
