Musica Antica – Festival of Early Music

Join the ANU School of Music for Musica Antica, an inspiring and informative week of unique concerts, recital performances and lecture demonstrations celebrating the composers, playing techniques and music of the past.  www.music.anu.edu.au/earlymusicfest

During the Music Antica festival, international and national exponents and leaders in their artistic and academic fields, will be in Canberra (or via videoconferencing technology) treating audiences to a program full of jewels of music from the 18th and 19th century.  Notable for guitarists are the involvement of Italian guitarist and conductor Carlo Barone and a video link with American lutenist Paul O’Dette.  Head of the School of Music Adrian Walter and the ANU guitar students are participating as well.

Tawadros and Grigoryan “Band of Brothers”

In Canberra for one night only, the oud and guitar quartet of Joseph Tawadros (oud), James Tawadros (percussion), Slava and Leonard Grigoryan (guitar) perform together as the “Band of Brothers.”  Their concert will be held at the Southern Cross Club in Woden on 6 October.

Epiphanies! Jonathan Paget and Lisa Harper-Brown

In a stunning collaboration between two award-winning Australian musicians – soprano Lisa Harper-Brown and classical guitarist Jonathan Paget – “Epiphanies” presents an enthrallingly dramatic program for guitar and voice, including works by Argento, Britten and Brouwer. Of particular note is Argento’s Letters from Composers, which dramatises the real words of the great composers in song, poignantly expressing their most intimate thoughts, gripes and creative epiphanies in selections from real historical letters.

Z.o.o. guitar duo from The Netherlands

Guitarists Peter Constant and Marion Schaap (duo Z.o.o.) have been based in the Netherlands for the past 10 years. Their impeccable ensemble playing, passionate music-making and on-stage repartee has made them one of the most popular guitar ensembles on the Dutch chamber music circuit.  “Z.o.o.” repertoire includes original transcriptions of Bach, Scarlatti, Schumann, Poulenc, Milhaud, etc. Peter was the 1989 “most outstanding graduate” of the ANU School of Music (Timothy Kain) and a founding member of the quartet Guitar Trek. Ricardo Gallén & John Griffiths

Internationally renowned Spanish guitar maestro Ricardo Gallén returns to Canberra in a double concert featuring Professor John Griffiths from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music – a researcher and performer of early music.  The concert is to be held at  Llewellyn Hall on Friday evening, 12 August 2011.  Please check the ANU School of Music website for details and ticketing.  Please check back to get an update on the time and date.

January 2012 summer school

The regular guitar summer school hosted by Classical Guitar Society Sydney will not be held in January 2012.  They are taking a break after 20 years of hosting.  They promise to be back in 2013.

The good news is there is another option, across the Tasman.   Canberra-based John Couch is Summer School Director for the Taranaki Classical Guitar Society Summer School scheduled for 16-21 January at New Plymouth on the North Island. You can find more information at their website. Click here.

Brazilian guitarist Guilherme Vincens in Canberra

Award-winning visiting guitarist Guilherme Vincens, from the University of São João Del Rei in Minas Gerais, Brazil, performs Classical Spanish, Latin American and Brazilian Bossa Nova music on his first ever trip to Australia. Local jazz and Brazilian music performer Cicilia Kemezys will guest appear on some romantic Bossa Nova songs on flute and voice; Canberra guitarist Milena Cifali will also feature on a magical new composition by International composer Jesmond Grixti written especially for this concert.
